The last five places in the Super 12s stage of the National Counties T20 will be decided on Sunday.

The top three teams in each of the four groups will progress to the Super 12s – four mini tournaments hosted by each of the group winners – with Group Four the only one where all three qualifiers are already confirmed.

Cornwall and Devon, who meet at Werrington, will have the opportunity to top the group but if they take points off each other they could be overtaken by Wiltshire who host winless Herefordshire at Westbury.

In Group Three, the four sides in action on Sunday all have the opportunity to progress. Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire each have eight points with Berkshire top only on superior points difference.

Bedfordshire have home advantage against Berkshire at Luton while Buckinghamshire host Wales NC at Marlow. Although Wales are bottom of the group, a double on Sunday would put them in the equation for a Super 12s place.

Three counties – Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire – are scrapping for the last Super 12s place in Group Two. Norfolk and Lincolnshire, who have completed their group programme, have already qualified and Suffolk would have done had that not been deducted four points for fielding an unregistered player. Norfolk are guaranteed top spot whatever happens on Sunday and will host one of the Super 12 tournaments at Sprowston on August 9.

Suffolk now need to beat Hertfordshire twice in the first county matches staged at Mellis CC although one will suffice if Cambridgeshire drop points against Norfolk at Exning.

In Group One Shropshire, who have also completed their group programme, and Staffordshire are already through to the Super 12s. Staffordshire require one win against Cumbria at Carlisle to displace Shropshire at the top of the group while Cheshire need to win both matches against Northumberland at the South Northumberland club in Gosforth to overtake their hosts and clinch third place.

Staffordshire are making their second visit to Carlisle in a month having suffered a one wicket defeat in the NV Play National Counties Trophy quarter-final last month.

Staffordshire are missing the injured Sam Keeling-Wright, who took five wickets in the Trophy quarter-final, but welcome back Derbyshire Academy batter Niall McHale. Jack Hammond of Meakins is a potential T20 debutant having made his senior debut as a concussion substitute in last season’s NCCA Cluberly Championship match against Cambridgeshire.

Cumbria have included Barrow all-rounder Declan Tyson in their squad for his county debut and have recalled Kendal wicketkeeper Harry Temperton, slow left-armer Ethan Hardie-Knight and Kian Larmour. Keswick all-rounder Paul Hindmarch will make his seasonal debut and add experience to a side that contains four teenagers and two 20-year-olds.

Cheshire, who beat Cumbria in last weekend’s Trophy semi-final, have named a much-changed side for their double-header against Northumberland. Sandbach all-rounder Jack Collett will make his debut with Alfie Usher, Will Espley and Xander Selby all recalled.

Northumberland have Durham off-spinner George Drissell available and have also included seamer Calum Fletcher and slow left-armer Oli McGee in a 12-man squad.

Suffolk welcome back former Northamptonshire left-arm wrist spinner Freddie Heldreich for the historic match at Mellis, whose ground is located between Thornham Parva and Thornham Magna. Heldreich has yet to appear in this season’s T20 competition as he has been playing in the new EUT20 tournament in Belgium.

Hertfordshire have made five changes to the side beaten twice by Norfolk three weeks ago with Ben Clifford, Cole Seggery, Nafis Shaikh, Tom Arnold and Finn Kelsey all recalled. Former Derbyshire all-rounder Archie Harrison is unavailable this weekend.

Norfolk are missing batter Alfie Cooper due to work commitments with Norwich School so Jonah Wicks will replace him against Cambridgeshire. Seamers Brett Stolworthy and Joe Everett return after missing the double over Suffolk two weeks ago.

Cambridgeshire’s side shows three changes to the one which tied the opener but lost the second match against Lincolnshire two weeks ago. Former Glamorgan batter Tom Cullen returns along with batter Ralph Hayward and seamer Nic Huckle.

Northamptonshire all-rounder Gus Miller will make his first appearance for Bedfordshire in two years against Berkshire. Miller made his maiden first-class half-century last week when he was called up as an injury replacement for Northamptonshire’s Rothesay County Championship match against Durham.

Bedfordshire also have former Essex seamer Jamal Richards available for his competition debut.

Berkshire have included batter Matt Dalrymple in a 13-man squad for the first time this season. If Dalrymple plays he will become just the 14th player Berkshire have used in all cricket this season.

Buckinghamshire have four players with first-class experience in their 12-man squad against Wales NC. Former Worcestershire left-hander Matt Pardoe is joined by former Somerset off-spinner Bertie Foreman, whose impressive early-season form with Buckinghamshire helped him to secure a two-month contract with Kent.

Northamptonshire batter Aadi Sharma is available to play for his native county again this weekend with contracted Worcestershire batter Rehaan Edavalath set his first competitive appearance of the season having made his seasonal debut in Thursday’s Showcase match against Middlesex.

Wales NC have three of their contracted Glamorgan players – Jack Hope-Bell, Romano Franco and Ben Morris – available to face Buckinghamshire. Rhodri Lewis returns to lead the side, with former Nottinghamshire batter Sam King recalled along with wicketkeeper Lewis Popple and promising seamer Tom Edwards.

Devon give a debut to Thorverton seamer George Daldorph in their cross-Tamar matches at Werrington. They also have Gloucestershire Academy all-rounder James Matravers available but Craig Penbrthy (wrist) and Sam Read (ankle) are injured.

Callum Harvey is unavailable this weekend so Lawrence Walker will captain the side and James Horler, the Championship captain, comes in for his first T20 appearance in two years.

Cornwall have added Ryan Tonkin, Ellis Whiteford and Alfie MacDonald to the side which beat Herefordshire twice two weeks ago.

Wiltshire have contracted Gloucestershire off-spinner Alfie Johnson available against Herefordshire. He returns in place of Archie Fairfax-Ross in the only change to the side which completed a double over Dorset last time out.

Batter Cyrus Shafi, who joined from Herefordshire earlier this season, will face his former county.

Herefordshire are missing former Worcestershire and Leicestershire all-rounder George Rhodes who is getting married.

Knowle & Dorridge all-rounder Callum Bennett returns as Herefordshire seek to end a disappointing campaign with their first win. Herefordshire have also been docked four points for playing an unregistered player in their two defeats by Devon at Blundell’s School last month.

Alfie MacDonald and Ben Ellis took the opportunity to showcase their talent before Cornwall went down to a 100 runs defeat against Somerset in a 50-overs Showcase match at Wadebridge.

Camborne batter MacDonald, Cornwall’s acting-captain, made an unbeaten century with Ellis keeping his company in an unbroken last wicket stand of 62 in 11 overs.

MacDonald was 76 when the ninth wicket fell but Ellis held up an end, facing 27 balls before he got off the mark, which ensured that his partner reached three figures.

Once MacDonald had completed his century, Ellis cut loose, striking three huge sixes in his unbeaten 29 which ensured that Cornwall batted out their full allocation of overs.

Earlier Ellis, a seamer from Callington, had impressed with the ball by taking four for 40 which checked Somerset’s progress after Will Smeed had entertained a large crowd with 130 from 96 balls with 11 fours and five sixes.

Smeed shared a second wicket partnership of 196 in 26 overs with Archie Vaughan (88) and at one stage it appeared that Cornwall might be chasing a target in excess of 350.

But Ellis and his new ball partner Ryan Tonkin (three for 53) pegged Somerset back with the last eight wickets going down in the final 10 overs of the innings.
