Staffordshire’s defeat was their largest by runs margin with off-spinner Bertie Foreman (four for 54) and slow left-armer Conner Haddow (five for 45) spinning them out for 197 on the last day. Staffordshire’s previous heaviest defeat had been 186 runs by Lincolnshire at Sleaford in 2008.
A half-century from skipper James Kettleborough had given Staffordshire a glimmer of hope of avoiding defeat but the innings quickly unravelled after lunch when four wickets went down for one run in 11 balls including Dan Lincoln, LBW to Foreman for 13.
Sam Keeling-Wright decided to go down with all guns blazing – 35 from 28 balls – but Buckinghamshire had wrapped up victory by mid-afternoon.
Foreman, who was released by Sussex last year, is about to come to the end of a two-month contract with Kent and his likely availability for the rest of the season will be boost for Buckinghamshire’s ambitions for retaining their title.
Haddow, who has been trialling with Worcestershire, picked up where he left off last season when he took a record 16 wickets in Buckinghamshire’s victory over Devon in the play-off final at West Bromwich Dartmouth.
He has now taken 12 five wicket hauls in his last 14 Championship matches with his latest taking him to 105 wickets in that period.
It was closer in the other Eastern Division One match at Bury St Edmunds where Suffolk held their nerve to beat Northumberland by 17 runs.
Alex Oxley’s 71 proved the decisive innings as he guided Suffolk from a precarious 92 for six to 171 all out.
Suffolk looked like they would win more comfortably when Northumberland slipped to 56 for six but two of their debutants, Rory Mustard and Callum Gaffney, doubled the total in a seventh wicket partnership.
Mustard, the 17-year-old son of former Durham and England international wicketkeeper Phil, completed a composed half century and added 38 for the eight wicket with Matt Oswell which got Northumberland to within 20 of their target of 171.
But Mustard went LBW to Ollie Burle after almost two-and-a-half hours at the crease and Suffolk’s three-pronged spin attack of Tom Harper, Burle and Jack Beaumont eventually prevailed on a dry, turning pitch to deny Northumberland victory in their first Division One match.
Slow left-armer Beaumont wrapped up the win when he had Oswell LBW and off-spinner Harper finished with four for 73 and nine in the match.
Devon, last season’s Western Division champions, began their title defence with an eight wickets win over Herefordshire at Sidmouth thanks to six wickets from off-spinner Sam Read.
Herefordshire appeared well placed to bat out for a draw after Worcestershire Academy prospect Joe Porter made 81 on debut and George Rhodes (96) and Luke Powell (47) then added 89 for the fifth wicket.
But the departure of Powell, caught at short leg off Read, started a collapse which saw Herefordshire lose their last six wickets for 28 in 14 overs which left Devon with a comfortable target of 115 in a minimum of 33 overs.
Rhodes, a winter recruit from Suffolk, missed out on a century on his first Championship appearance for Herefordshire when he went LBW pushing forward to slow left-armer Matt Whalley.
Devon chased down their target inside 20 overs with Ben Privett leading the way with 65 not out.
Berkshire were indebted to another valuable innings from Toby Greatwood to see them to a five wickets victory over Oxfordshire at Falkland.
The former Middlesex seamer was used as a specialist batter in this match , a move that brought him 213 runs without being dismissed.
Having made his maiden Championship century in the first innings, Greatwood followed up with 55 not out in the second and he was there at the end, lifting Luke Maslen for six to secure the win.
Greatwood added 70 for the fifth wicket with Euan Woods, whose composed 70 from 127 balls, helped Berkshire recover from slipping to 37 for three.
Earlier, Berkshire had dismissed Oxfordshire for 233 with spinners Rhys Lewis and Samm Daniel sharing wickets, which left them to chase 205 on a turning pitch.
Cornwall were the first winners in this season’s Championship as they wrapped up a nine wickets victory over Shropshire half-an-hour before lunch at Truro in Western Division Two.
Seamer Ellis Whiteford demolished Shropshire with career-best figures of five for 15, which included five of the last six wickets to fall. The departure of captain Charlie Home, bowled by Whiteford for 31, triggered the collapse which saw the last six wickets go down for 31.
Cornwall, who were relegated last season, needed just 19 for victory and they got there in 34 balls for the early loss of opener Tom Orpe.
Dorset also clinched victory before lunch over Wales NC at Ebbw Vale where their 263 runs win was their largest by runs margin since 1928. Dorset’s record runs victory – 307 – also came at Ebbw Vale in 1925 but on that occasion Monmouthshire were the host county.
A half-century from Kurtis Marsh and 31 not out from Luke Griffiths held up Dorset for a while but Hampshire staff man Felix Organ worked his way through the order to finish with competition-best figures of six for 69 to go with his Championship best 70 in the first innings.
Cumbria ended a four-year wait for a Championship win by beating Hertfordshire by 49 runs at Furness in Eastern Division One.
It was Cumbria’s first win in the competition since they beat Northumberland on July 5 2022 and came thanks to nine wickets match haul from seamer Sam Sharp.
A half century from Ed Hales who shared a fifth wicket stand of 93 with his captain, Ben Waring (22), made Cumbria wait for their first breakthrough of the last day but once they achieved it – the pair departed in the space of two overs – they were able to make smoother progress to their win.
Former Essex all-rounder Jack Plom provided some late resistance for the second time in the match but Cumbria were not to be denied.
The only draw in the opening round of Championship matches came at Sleaford where Lincolnshire and Norfolk batted themselves into stalemate on a flat pitch.
Nathan Muggeridge (68) and Charlie Hood (60) made half centuries before Norfolk declared their second innings at 297 for seven but Lincolnshire showed no interest in chasing a target of 342 in a minimum of 44 overs.
They batted out time at 101 for two from 41 overs, with Tom Keast compiling an unbeaten half-century, before the sides shook hands on a predictable draw.
