Game 2
The heat was relentless and this time around Dorset won the toss, but they chose to bat first. The first four overs yielded 44 runs with Will Tripcony hitting 36 from just nineteen balls. Finn Gordon (9) had stayed with him, but allowing Tripcony to have the lion’s share of the strike. They both fell in the fifth over to Sam Freestone (2 for 26) as he first bowled Gordon and then saw Tripcony well caught by Stan Brown. Once again Ben Rogers (44) was the mainstay of the Dorset innings until adjudged LBW to Ed Young (2 for 20) who had also bowled Dylan Church. Ben Rogers also saw Joe Weld fall, caught by Stan Brown from the bowling of Archie Fairfax-Ross. Rogers fell in the sixteenth over having pushed the score on to 113 for 5. The last three overs saw a further thirty runs added with the loss of just one more wicket as Cyrus Shafi took another fine catch to dismiss Alfie Appleby Ingram from the bowling of Archie Pascoe. The final score for Dorset was 147 for 6 from their twenty overs.
In reply, Tom Cheater continued with his excellent strike rate hitting 32 runs from just fourteen balls. His opening partner Will Naish (36) was the fourth wicket to fall having watched Olli Brown and Jake Goodwin fall earlier, both caught by Will Tripcony from the bowling of Martin and Smith. Martin also claimed the wicket of Cyrus Shafi caught behind by keeper Ben Rogers. At this stage the score was 110 for 5 from 15.4 overs leaving 38 runs required for victory from just 26 balls. Enter Stan Brown to join his captain Ed Young. Any concerns the Wiltshire supporters may have had were dispelled in one crucial over in which the first two balls were despatched for sixes well over the bowler’s head and over the boundary fielders by Stan Brown who went on to score 23 runs from just eleven balls. Ed Young played his part with 32 runs from 28 balls as Wiltshire reached their target, 148 for 5, with 9 balls to spare.
Another four points leaves Wiltshire well placed to progress in the T20 competition with just two games remaining. The final group games will be played at Westbury on the 5th July when Wiltshire take on Herefordshire.
One very pleasing feature of this campaign is that everyone has made a significant contribution to the team’s success and with this team of heroes anyone is likely to step up and aid another Wiltshire victory!
