Oxfordshire routed Wiltshire inside two days in their NCCA Cluberly Championship Division One match at Corsham with captain Max Mannering taking career-best match figures.

Off-spinner Mannering followed up his best bowling an innings with five for 52 to finish with 11 for 69 in the match, the first time he had taken ten or more wickets in a Championship game.

Wiltshire, who trailed by 180 in the first innings, were dismissed for 166 and beaten by an innings and 14 runs inside five sessions.

Oxfordshire’s win came after defeats by Berkshire and Devon in their first two matches of the season and eased their relegation concerns with one more game – against Herefordshire at Thame starting on August 16 – to play.

Oxfordshire extended their first innings to 303 although Freddie Smith added just four more to his overnight score of 89 with Wiltshire off-spinners Joe King and Alfie Johnson sharing eight wickets.

Opener Cyrus Shaf, with Wiltshire’s only half-century of the match, and Jake Goodwin (37) provided some resistance but captain Ed Young (23) was the only other batter to reach 20.

Wiltshire’s second innings was done and dusted inside 51 overs with the last four wickets going down for ten.

Cornwall also won inside two days despite a defiant century from Wales NC captain Cameron Herring at Ebbw Vale in Western Division Two.

Herring’s 144 – his seventh Championship century – saved Wales from an innings defeat, but only just. Herring cleared the first innings arrears of 308 with only last man Ben Jones for company and was last out shortly after Cornwall had claimed the extra half hour to wrap up a ten wickets win and inflict a third successive defeat on Wales.

The damage was done earlier in the day when Will MacVicar and Paul Smith competed centuries for Cornwall which, with Alex Blake’s 100 on Sunday, gave them three century-makers in an innings for the first time since 2004.

MacVicar and Smith shared a fifth wicket partnership of 160 before Smith declared Cornwall’s first innings on 437 for six, their highest total against Wales.

Wales, as they did against Shropshire last week, offered stiffer resistance in their second innings, initially through Kurtis Marsh (34) then Rhodri Lewis (57) before Herring held Cornwall at bay for three-and-a-half hours.

Herring eventually lifted MacVicar to long-on to give him eight wickets in the match to go with his century and Cornwall needed only five balls to score the six runs they needed for victory.

Defending national and Eastern Division champions Buckinghamshire have plenty of work to do on the final day against Suffolk at Chesham if they are to avoid a second successive defeat.

Seamer Tom Weymes appeared to have put Buckinghamshire in control when he improved his career best bowling for the second time this season at Chesham when he finished with five for 45 to help dismiss Suffolk for 173.

Buckinghamshire had a first innings lead of 32 but they managed to extend it to 214 despite a second half-century of the match from Ewan Cox.

Slow left-armer Jack Beaumont, with four for 16 in 16 overs, and Dan Shanks (three for 41) led Suffolk’s fightback which left them to chase 215 for victory in four sessions.

They made a strong start and will need 135 more on the final day with nine wickets intact and Ollie Burle (33 not out) and Darren Ironside (17 not out) unbeaten.

Northumberland, the Eastern Division One leaders, stayed in control against Cambridgeshire at Sawston after slow left-armer Oli McGee took five for 98 – the 12th five wicket haul of his career in the Championship – to dismiss their hosts for 325.

Seamer Calum Fletcher weighed in with four for 51 but Cambridgeshire safely avoided the threat of the follow-on with a solid batting display led by half centuries from Ben Claydon (72) and Callum Guest (60) on his seasonal debut.

But Northumberland’s first innings lead of 95 was significant and they increased it to 220 for the loss of two wickets by the close with Ross Whitfield (49 not out) and Harry Crawshaw (41 not out) both going well.

Devon, the reigning Western Division champions and leaders, are involved in an intriguing tussle with Berkshire at Blundell’s School.

Euan Woods’s eighth Championship century and supporting fifties from Charlie Dunnett and Rhys Lewis enabled Berkshire to declare on 348 for eight with a lead of just six.

Devon ended the day 164 in front with one wicket down and Sam Elstone (79 not out) and James Horler (50 not out) having added 115 for the second wicket but with a potentially tricky decision to make on a last day declaration.

Cheshire’s Western Division Two match against Shropshireat Nantwich is also bubbling up to a fascinating finale.

Shropshire earned a valuable first innings lead of 50 thanks to 66 not out from Ben Lees and 40 from Roman Walker with the pair sharing an eighth wicket stand of 69.

Shropshire looked the likely winners when seamer George McCormick took three wickets to reduce Cheshire to 21 for three just before tea but Henry Dobson (88 not out) and Liam Clorley, with 83 not out in just his second Championship match, batted through the final session to close on 192 for three.

Cumbria opener Nathan Waterston could be forgiven if he has a sleepless night as he ended the second day against Norfolk at Sprowston in Eastern Division Two, needing one run to complete a maiden Championship century.

A two-day finish looked likely when Cumbria, who trailed by 179 on first innings, slumped to 35 for four but Waterston repaired the damage, first in a fifth wicket alliance of 110 with his captain, Matt Sempill (45) then with an unbroken sixth wicket stand of 52 with Max Winskill (21 not out).

Waterston had batted almost three-and-three-quarter hours at the close, faced 166 balls and struck 15 fours and a six. At 197 for five Cumbria are, in effect, 16 for five and have much to do to avoid defeat.

Earlier Alfie Cooper’s third Championship century of his career had taken Norfolk to 351 for eight in their 90 overs with slow left-armer Freddie Fallows taking his second five wicket haul for Cumbria.

Former Leicestershire batter Sam Evans made a Championship-best 154 to help Lincolnshire pile up 479 for six against Bedfordshire at Dunstable.

Evans faced 137 balls and hit 23 fours and a six in his third century in the competition with half-centuries from brothers Nic and Tom Keast, Amartya Kaul and Ben Wright giving Lincolnshire a first innings lead of 301.

Bedfordshire reduced the deficit by 158 for the loss of two wickets by the close with Nabil Moughal unbeaten on 75 – already a career-best. Moughal added 89 for the second wicket with former Scotland Under-19 batter Jamie Dunk who was caught behind off leg-spinner Seamus Nazir half-an-hour before the close.
