Berkshire were 132 for seven when captain Andy Rishton departed early in the day and in danger of conceding a sizeable first innings advantage until Greatwood played the innings of his career.
The former Middlesex seamer had just one half century to his name before this match but he defied Oxfordshire for 214 balls and struck 18 fours and four sixes in his 158 not out.
Samm Daniel (30) assisted Greatwood in an eighth wicket partnership of 84 before last man and debutant Abdullah Iqbal played a valuable supporting role in a last wicket stand of 94. Hampshire Academy leg-spinner Iqbal scored just two but he defied Oxfordshire for 61 balls while Greatwood picked up runs at the other end.
When Iqbal eventually fell, LBW to Max Mannering, Berkshire had built a useful lead of 31 but by the end of the day Oxfordshire had cleared their arrears and moved 155 ahead with four wickets in hand thanks to Luke Maslen’s polished 95.
Devon all-rounder James Matravers also provided lower order fireworks with a century on his Championship debut against Herefordshire at Sidmouth.
The game was evenly poised when Devon were 144 for six but Matravers (124) and Lawrence Walker (60) put Devon in command with a seventh wicket partnership of 149.
Matravers, a Gloucestershire Academy player, had already impressed for Devon in white ball cricket and took that form into the longer format by striking three sixes and 16 fours in a 110-ball innings.
With Sam Read making 44 not out and Seb Linnitt 74 earlier in the innings, Devon were able to declare with a lead of 200 at 393 for nine.
Herefordshire lost Ben Chapman-Lilley to the third ball of their second innings but their fightback was led by two of their debutants, Joe Porter and Henry Hardinges, in a second wicket partnership of 126.
Malvern College pupil Hardinges, the son of former Gloucestershire all-rounder Mark, eventually went for 65 but Worcestershire Academy batter Porter was unbeaten at the close with Herefordshire on 162 for two.
Defending champions Buckinghamshire took control of their Eastern Division One match against Staffordshire at Chesham with excellent seam bowling from Tom Weymes and Ed Bragg and a second half-century of the match for Bertie Foreman.
Weymes claimed his first five wicket haul for Buckinghamshire – he had never previously taken more than three wickets in an innings – and Bragg weighed in with four for 41 to dismiss Staffordshire for 143 in their first innings.
That gave Buckinghamshire a valuable lead of 68 on a seamer-friendly pitch and they were able to extend it to 385 before captain Conner Haddow declared at the end of the day.
Brothers Archie and Billy Dodds added 62 for the first wicket but that quickly became 67 for three before former Worcestershire left-hander settled things down with 47 with support from Aum Raykar (29).
Foreman, the former Sussex all-rounder who is now on a short-term contract with Kent, followed up with an attacking 60 from 49 balls in a sixth wicket stand of 57 with Josh Lincoln.
Bragg made another valuable contribution with the bat – 33 not out – before Buckinghamshire pulled out challenging Staffordshire to make the highest fourth innings total in their history on the final day.
Former Durham pair Ross Whitfield and Jonny Bushnell struck centuries to improve Northumberland’s hopes of starting life in Division One with a victory against Suffolk at Bury St Edmunds.
Whitfield, Northumberland’s captain, and Bushnell shared a third wicket partnership of 210 which took Northumberland to 419 for nine – a first innings lead of one. Whitfield’s 160 was his third century in the competition and Bushell’s 129 his first for Northumberland in any competition. Off-spinner Tom Harper claimed the second five wicket haul of his Suffolk career.
Bushnell then took the new ball and snared Ollie Burle and Feroze Khushi, a first innings century-maker, as Suffolk limped to 92 for six at the close.
Cornwall all-rounder Will MacVicar showed his liking for Shropshire’s bowling with a century at Truro in Western Division Two.
MacVicar made his maiden century against Shropshire at Bridgnorth in 2023 and followed up with his second – 111 – in a seventh wicket partnership of 156 with Cornwall captain Paul Smith (85).
Their alliance took Cornwall to 361 all out and a useful lead of 173 although Shropshire ended the day only 29 behind with six wickets intact.
A fourth wicket stand of 50 between Seb Scott (48) and captain Charlie Home (28 not out) took Shropshire to 144 for four although Scott went LBW to Elliot Hooper’s last ball of the day.
Dorset again dominated Wales NC on the second day at Ebbw Vale where excellent team bowling dismissed their hosts for 150.
Dorset had a lead of 246 but they decided not to enforce the follow-on, instead opting to score quick runs to set Wales an improbable fourth innings target.
Hampshire man Felix Organ (48) and Ben Rogers (43) led Dorset to a declaration at 202 for seven, which left Wales to chase a target 249.
Opener Kurtis Marsh frustrated Dorset with 40 not out to steer Wales to 76 for three at the close.
Former Cheshire batter Ed Wade made a century on his first Championship appearance for Cumbria against Hertfordshire at Furness in Eastern Division Two.
Hertfordshire gained a first innings lead of 36 thanks to a seventh wicket stand of 102 between Sam Davis (63) and Jack Plom (60) with seamer Sam Sharp taking five wickets for Cumbria.
Cumbria were only 10 in front when they lost their third second innings wicket but Wade batted them out of trouble and into a potential match-winning position by making 109 from 158 balls before Freddie Fallows thumped a quickfire half-century.
Jacob Gordon’s four wickets helped to dismiss Cumbria for 277 which left Hertfordshire with a tricky target of 242.
Hertfordshire’s task became even more daunting when Sharp took three wickets in seven balls at the start of their second innings to leave them in deep trouble at 27 for four.
Solid batting down the order helped Lincolnshire to open up their match against Norfolk at Sleaford by declaring 44 behind.
Half-centuries from Jordan Cook (61) and James Laud (51) and 40 from former Leicestershire batter Sam Evans led Lincolnshire’s first innings effort with Hamidullah Qadri the pick of Norfolk’s attack with four for 58.
Norfolk extended their lead to 118 for the loss of Sam Arthurton by the close with opener Nathan Muggeridge making a maiden and unbeaten half-century.
