Staffordshire will be boosted by the return of Derbyshire newcomer Rory Haydon for Sunday’s National Counties T20 Super-12s competition at Moddershall.
Seamer Haydon, who has been a Staffordshire regular for the past three seasons, was signed by Derbyshire last week on a short-term contract ahead of the Metro Bank One Day Cup.
He made his senior debut for Derbyshire in last Sunday’s Showcase Match against Bedfordshire at Dunstable but is available for Staffordshire duty this weekend.
Staffordshire, who are still technically defending their title as 2023 winners after rain washed out last year’s Finals Day, will also welcome back captain James Kettleborough who sat out the NCCA Cluberly Championship victory over Lincolnshire as wife gave birth to their third child on the morning of the match.
Staffordshire will play Norfolk in the opening match of the day at Moddershall (10am) with the losers facing Herefordshire at 1pm and the winners having a break before playing Herefordshire at 4.30pm. The winners of each of the four Super-12s tournaments will progress to Finals Day at Wormsley on Sunday August 24.
Norfolk include Nottinghamshire batter Sammy King, fresh from a Second XI century against Glamorgan, in a full-strength squad.
Herefordshire are able to include seamer Roshan Venkataraman for the first time this season following his recovery from injury and former Worcestershire batter Taylor Cornall is also available.
Cornwall, who were beaten finalists in 2023, host Wales NC and Oxfordshire at Wadebridge.
Paul Smith returns from injury to lead Cornwall and St Just batter Ellis May, who has come through the county’s youth system, is set for his senior debut.
Worcestershire batter/slow left-armer Tom Hinley will make his seasonal debut for Oxfordshire who also include Sussex batter Harrison Ward in their squad.
Batter Arthur Hanson, a product of Oxfordshire’s pathway system who is now playing for Sussex Under-18s, is set for his senior county debut and seamer Tom Davis returns having missed the drawn Championship match with Herefordshire.
Wales NC include two debutants, seamer Asim Hameed and Usk’s Matthew Marriott, in their 12-man squad. Ollie Sherwood is set for his T20 debut and former Northamptonshire leg-spinner Alex Russell returns to the side.
Berkshire topped their T20 group despite losing four points for fielding an unregistered player in their back-to-back wins over Wales. They now have home advantage at Wargrave for matches against Dorset and Suffolk.
Berkshire welcome back batter Jonny Connell and seamer Ben Salter, who have been trialling with Essex and Hampshire respectively in recent weeks.
Dorset have included Scotland and Sussex left-arm seamer Brad Currie in their squad for his first appearance in two years. Currie is Dorset born and bred and progressed through the county’s pathway system into the senior side before he was signed by Sussex three years ago. He has gone on to play in 12 One Day Internationals and 18 T20 Internationals for Scotland, the most recent against Jersey last month.
Another home-grown player contracted to a first-class county, Hampshire batter/wicketkeeper Joe Eckland, is also available with slow left-armer Mo Abbas, who took nine wickets in the match in the NCCA Cluberly Championship victory over Shropshire last week, also named in a 12-man squad.
Suffolk are badly affected by unavailability with regulars Adam Jones, Dan Shanks, Alex Cruickshank and Tom Harper notable absentees. Darren Ironside is also ruled out by injury.
Jack Beaumont will make his first T20 appearance of the season with Ollie Burle, Freddie Cloud, Jack Auld and Ben Whittaker all called up. Bury St Edmunds all-rounder Ben Whittaker makes his county debut and Sudbury’s Matt Clark makes his first appearance in a competitive match.
Cambridgeshire make a quick return to Sawston, where they hosted Suffolk in a Championship match last weekend, with Northumberland and Cumbria the opposition this time.
Batter Nikhil Gorantla is available for the first time since he signed a two-year contract with Surrey two weeks ago. Seamers James Cox and Matt Rees are recalled to the T20 squad.
Northumberland again have Durham batter Haydon Mustard available and Oli McGee returns to captain the side having missed the final group double-header against Cheshire.
Cumbria have made four changes to the side beaten by Staffordshire in their final group match with Northern seamer Liam Grey recalled for his first county match in three years.
Seamers Evan Williams and Paul Hindmarch and wicketkeeper Drew Postlethwaite all return.
The last of this season’s Showcase Matches between National Counties and first-class counties will be played next week, all of them 50 overs contests.
With Cumbria in T20 action on Sunday and facing a long trip back from Sawston , Cheshire will provide the opposition for Lancashire at Sedbergh School on Monday.
Norfolk host Kent at Sprowston on Monday but will be missing King, who is required by Nottinghamshire, and seamer Brett Stolworthy who has work commitments. Jonah Wicks is added to the squad.
Off-spinner Hamidullah Qadri will face his former county while Kent have included opening batter Ben Compton who played one match for Norfolk in 2021, in their squad.
Cornwall host Somerset at Wadebridge on Monday with the first-class county taking part in their second Showcase match of the season after beating Devon in a T20 fixture at Exmouth in May.
