Nils Priestley announced himself to National Counties cricket in spectacular style with a breathtaking 41-ball century in the T20 semi-final against Berkshire at Tring Park.
The left-hander finished with 147 not out from 66 balls, the second-highest score in the competition, and followed up with a more measured half-century and four for 27 with his left arm spin in the final later in the day against Cornwall.
Staffordshire were aware of Priestley’s potential before Finals Day as he had almost made a century in his second innings for the county.
Having made 14 in the first match against Northumberland at Gosforth, Priestley plundered 97 from 39 balls in the second game of the day in a contest that was reduced to 12 overs-a-side by rain.
Another half-century followed against Shropshire at Leek and Priestley had already been invited for trials with Worcestershire before his Finals Day fireworks.
Priestley, 22, made his debut for Staffordshire in last year’s Showcase match against Leicestershire at Knypersley and joined them on a regular basis this season with the aim of trying to resurrect his first-class career.
He made four Royal London Cup appearances for Derbyshire in 2021 but was released at the end of that season with his potential unfulfilled.
Playing for Loughborough UCCE has given Priestley exposure to county opposition and he took part in the second National Counties Player ID at Loughborough in March which was attended by coaches and scouts from first-class counties.
