George Tait has become such a familiar face in Oxfordshire’s side that will surprise many to learn that he has only just turned 22.
Having captained Oxfordshire’s Under-17 side, Tait made his senior county debut in July 2018 and has been a regular since competitive cricket returned after the 2020 season was lost to Covid.
Tait was a member both of Oxfordshire’s side that won the Durant National Counties Championship in 2021, beating Suffolk in the final, and their National Counties T20-winning side last year.
He made a brilliant century for the National Counties XI in their annual match against MCC at Banbury in August 2022 and demonstrated his all-round talent by taking a maiden five wicket haul with his off-spin in Oxfordshire’s opening Championship match of this season against Herefordshire at Eastnor.
The only surprise is that, given Oxfordshire’s partnership with Sussex and links with Gloucestershire, that Tait has yet to be taken on trial by a first-class county.
But he put himself in the shop window by taking part in the second National Counties Player ID Day at Loughborough University, where he is currently a student, in March where the sessions were attended by coaches and scouts from the 18 first-class counties.
