Staffordshire wicketkeeper/batter Callum Hawkins has certainly grasped the opportunity that presented itself to him this season.
Spencer Byatt was expected to succeed Alex Mellor as Staffordshire’s regular wicketkeeper this season but Nantwich’s success in the ECB Club Championship has meant his availability has been limited.
So Staffordshire turned to Hawkins and the 19-year-old from Moddershall & Oulton has not disappointed.
Hawkins opened the batting in Staffordshire’s National Counties Trophy campaign and made an important half-century in his first innings for the county to help them defeat Wales at Port Talbot.
He followed up with another half-century against Buckinghamshire on his home club ground and has retained his place in the side for the start of the Durant Cricket National Counties Championship.
Having been involved in the second National Counties Player ID Day at Loughborough University in March, Hawkins’s performances for Staffordshire helped to secure him selection for the National Counties XI for last month’s fixture against MCC at Winchester
Hawkins represented the Midlands at the Bunbury Under-15s Festival in 2019 and has been a regular for Oxford UCCE this season including playing in their friendly against Northamptonshire in April.
