National Counties T20 preview - week 2

Lancashire seamer Richard Gleeson will make his first appearance for Cumbria in seven years in Sunday’s National Counties T20 double-header against Northumberland at South Northumberland CC in Newcastle.

Gleeson was spotted playing for Cumbria – then Cumberland – by Northamptonshire in 2015 and after four successful seasons with them, he moved to Lancashire two years ago.

But Gleeson’s time at Old Trafford has been blighted by injuries with a stress fracture of the back restricting him to just two Vitality Blast appearances last season.

He signed a T20-only contract with Lancashire this season and has been included in Cumbria’s squad for their first matches of the season.

Northumberland, who were twice by Staffordshire last Sunday, have included batsmen Jack Jessop of Ashington and Ross Greenwell of Burnmoor in their squad.

Batsman Mahaaz Ahmed is in line to play for his third county in four seasons, this time for Staffordshire against Shropshire at Whitchurch.

Ahmed started with Herefordshire, made one National Counties Championship appearance for Cheshire last summer and has been named in Staffordshire’s squad having played for them in a friendly against the North Staffordshire and South Cheshire Premier League XI earlier this month.

Shropshire have called up Bridgnorth seamer Charlie Walker, Sentinel all-rounder James Shaw and Shrewsbury seamer Harry Darley in place of Michael Robinson and Sam Ellis, who are both unavailable, and David Laird, who is injured.

Greg Smith, the former Derbyshire and Essex all-rounder, will make his debut for Wales NC against Oxfordshire at Wormsley.

Smith previously played National Counties cricket for Cornwall but has joined Wales as player/assistant coach this season.

Glamorgan Academy seamer Ben Morris has been included in Wales’ squad along with the experienced Aneurin Norman.

Oxfordshire, fresh from a double over Berkshire last week, have named former Sussex Second XI seamer Josh Shaw in their squad for a potential competitive debut.

Suffolk have made six changes to their squad for the visit of Lincolnshire to Ipswich School.

Essex batsman Josh Rymell will play in the first match only with Matt Allen replacing him for the second.

Alex Oxley, Ben Parker, Matt Wareing and debutant Arthur Summers, a batsman from Worlington, also come into the squad.

Norfolk have included slow left-armer Cameron Graveling, another product of the county’s youth system, in their squad for a possible competitive debut against defending champions Hertfordshire at Haileybury School.

Graveling, who hails from Cromer, made his first senior appearance for Norfolk in the recent friendly against Essex Second XI at Billericay.

All-rounder Ben Coote, who also played in that match, is set for his first competitive appearance for Norfolk in three years.

Hertfordshire have included Essex batsmen past and present, Kishen Velani and Robin Das in their squad with Das set to make his National Counties debut.

Callum Haggett, the former Kent and Somerset all-rounder, will captain Devon against Cornwall at Werrington in the absence of Jamie Stephens and Matt Thompson.

Cornwall have included Scott Kellow and Tom Dinnis in their squad after they shared the honours with Herefordshire at Brockhampton last week.

All-rounder Gus Miller is back in Bedfordshire’s squad for the visit of Buckinghamshire to Dunstable.

Miller’s efforts for Bedfordshire and Loughborough MCCU over the last four seasons have secured him a contract with Northamptonshire for whom he played against Bedfordshire in last season’s Showcase fixture at Wantage Road.

Phil Harris, the Barnards Green and former Cardiff MCCU all-rounder, has been included in Herefordshire’s squad for the first time in seven years for their games against Wiltshire at the South Wilts club in Salisbury.

Wiltshire make one change to the squad that was beaten twice by Dorset last week with Josh Croom replacing Brad Dawson. Warwickshire left-arm wrist spinner Jake Lintott and Gloucestershire all-rounder Will Naish are again available for National Counties duty.
