National Counties maintain winning ways in European Championship

The National Counties XI continued their unbeaten start to the Dream 11 European Championship in Malaga with back-to-back Group C wins over Italy and Germany.

National Counties, representing England in the 15-nation T10 competition at the Cartama Oval, first beat Italy by 33 runs and then ended the day by completing a tournament double over Germany with a 46 runs success.

Against Italy, National Counties racked up 127 for three in their ten overs with opener Harrison Ward (Oxfordshire and Sussex) continuing his prolific start to the tournament with 37 from 13 balls, including four sixes.

Staffordshire’s Alex Mellor followed up with 36 not out from 20 balls and, with handy contributions down the order for the Berkshire pair of Dan Lincoln and Andy Rishton and Tom Bevan of Wales NC, National Counties posted an imposing total.

Another miserly bowling performance from Wales seamer Richard Edwards, who took two for seven in his two overs, meant that Italy were soon in trouble in reply.

Hertfordshire’s Zaman Akhter took two wickets in eventful solitary over to help restrict Italy to 94 for six.

In the final match of the day, Dorset’s Luke Webb crashed 49 from 23 balls, with four sixes and three fours, to help National Counties to 135 for five.

Webb and Bevan, who made 35 not out from just ten balls – four of which went for sixes – added 77 in 22 balls for the third wicket.

Edwards conceded just 11 runs in his two overs which denied Germany early impetus and Herefordshire leg-spinner Alex Russell also stifled the innings by taking two for 11.

Fayaz Nasseri offered some late resistance by clobbering five sixes and two fours in his unbeaten 40 from 12 balls but Germany fell well short of their target at 89 for seven.

National Counties face another double-header on Wednesday September 29 with a re-match with Italy in the morning followed by an afternoon fixture against Czech Republic.
