National Counties XI fell to a surprise defeat against Belgium in the Dream11 European Championship in Malaga.
Having beaten the Netherlands by four wickets earlier in the day National Counties, who are representing England in the T10 tournament at the Cartama Oval, went down by seven wickets to Belgium in the second match of their day’s double-header.
National Counties recovered well from being 18 for three after 13 balls of their innings and reached 133 for five thanks to a fourth wicket partnership of 88 between Tom Bevan and Alex Mellor.
Bevan, of Wales NC, struck five sixes in his 23-ball 60 while Mellor also faced 23 balls in his unbeaten 43, which included four sixes.
But Belgium reached their target with nine balls to spare thanks to a second wicket stand of 107 between Ali Raza, with 56 from 23 balls, and 48 from 17 balls from Aziz Mohammad.
Against the Netherlands, Wales NC seamer Richard Edwards opened by taking one for one in his two overs – which included a maiden – before Wiltshire’s Arthur Godsal took two for 18.
Olivier Elenbaas lifted the Netherlands to 88 for eight with an unbeaten 30 from ten balls before National Counties slipped to 19 for three at the start of their reply.
Mellor repaired the damage with a solid 27 from 24 balls before Sam Pearce of Wales NC accelerated National Counties to victory with seven balls to spare with 28 not out from ten balls.
Belgium now sit top the six team table with three wins out of three after two days of the Championship week. Italy and Austria are next up for National Counties in another double-header on Wednesday October 6.
